TF Series

Industrial Thermowells for Temperature Sensors

TF series thermowells (protection tubes) are critical accessories for all temperature measurement applications. They isolate the sensing element from corrosive, high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-velocity process media — protecting both the sensor and personnel while enabling sensor replacement without process shutdown.

Overview

Thermowells are closed-end tubular fittings that protect temperature sensors — thermocouples, RTDs, and bimetallic thermometers — from direct contact with the process medium. In industrial environments where temperatures, pressures, flow velocities, and chemical exposure can damage or destroy sensing elements, a properly selected thermowell ensures reliable, long-term measurement while allowing sensor removal and replacement without draining or depressurizing the system.

The HMK TF series thermowells are manufactured in compliance with IEC international standards using blind-hole drilling technology for superior structural integrity. Available in three connection types — flanged (TF-10), threaded (TF-15), and welded (TF-20) — with multiple material options from standard 304 stainless steel for general service up to GH3039 nickel alloy for extreme high-temperature applications reaching 1300°C.

Each thermowell is pressure-tested at 15× its rated working pressure to ensure safe containment. X-ray inspection is available for critical applications requiring wall thickness and eccentricity verification. Custom dimensions, materials, and process connections can be manufactured to customer drawings with 2–3 week lead times.

Choosing a thermowell? The thermowell is Stage 2. See our complete sensor selection guide to first nail down the right thermocouple or RTD before specifying flange or thread type.

Frequently Asked Questions

A thermowell is a closed-end protective tube that shields temperature sensors (thermocouples, RTDs, bimetallic thermometers) from direct contact with process media. It protects against corrosion, high pressure, high flow velocity, and abrasion while allowing sensor replacement without shutting down the process or breaking the pressure seal.

Flanged thermowells (TF-10) are best for large pipes and high-pressure vessels where bolted connections enable easy maintenance. Threaded thermowells (TF-15) suit smaller pipe taps and moderate-pressure applications with quick installation. Welded thermowells (TF-20) provide permanent, leak-proof mounting for the highest pressure and vibration resistance — ideal when the thermowell is rarely removed.

304 SS is the most common choice for general industrial applications up to 800°C. Use 316L for enhanced corrosion resistance in chemical environments. For temperatures above 950°C, select GH3030 (to 1100°C) or GH3039 (to 1300°C) nickel superalloys. PTFE-lined thermowells are recommended for highly corrosive organic solvents and acids, but are limited to flange connections and 300°C maximum.

The maximum nominal pressure varies by model. Flanged (TF-10) and welded (TF-20) models achieve up to 38 MPa. Threaded models (TF-15) typically rate up to 5–30 MPa depending on the structural variant. All thermowells undergo hydrostatic pressure testing at 15 times the rated pressure to verify integrity before shipment.

Yes. We offer full customization including non-standard insertion lengths, bore diameters, process connection threads, flange sizes, and materials. Wear-resistant coatings (spray or welded) are available for abrasive media. Manufacturing from customer-supplied drawings typically requires 2–3 weeks lead time. Contact our engineering team with your requirements.

The insertion length (U) should position the sensor tip at the center of the pipe or vessel for representative temperature measurement. As a general rule, the insertion length equals half the pipe inner diameter plus any insulation or wall thickness. For vessels, consult process drawings to determine the optimal measurement point. Our engineering team can help with selection for your specific installation.
