HE60 Explosion-Proof Pressure Sensor

Overview

The HE60 explosion-proof pressure sensor is engineered for safe and reliable pressure measurement in hazardous environments where flammable gases, vapors, dusts, or mining atmospheres are present. Certified to ATEX standards, it offers dual protection options: intrinsic safety (Ex ia IIC T6 Ga) for Zone 0/1/2 and flameproof enclosure (Ex d IIC T6 Gb) — both selectable individually or combined on a single unit.

Unlike traditional explosion-proof transmitters that are bulky and difficult to install, the HE60 features an ultra-compact form factor. For ranges of 6 bar and above, it employs sputtered thin-film sensing technology on a fully welded stainless steel construction that completely isolates the pressure chamber from the electronics compartment — significantly enhancing both safety and service life. Ranges below 6 bar use welded stainless steel diaphragm isolation technology for equally robust protection.

With a measurement range spanning 35 kPa to 150 MPa, ±0.5% FS accuracy, and standard 4–20 mA or voltage outputs, the HE60 integrates seamlessly into existing SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems in petrochemical plants, oil refineries, mining operations, and marine applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ex ia (intrinsic safety) limits the electrical energy in the circuit so that no spark or thermal effect can ignite the surrounding atmosphere — it requires an external Zener safety barrier or galvanic isolator in the safe area. This is the highest protection level, certified for Zone 0 (continuous explosive atmosphere). Ex d (flameproof) encloses the electronics in a housing that can contain an internal explosion without igniting the external atmosphere. It is rated for Zone 1/2. The HE60 allows selecting either or both (code ED) on the same sensor.

If using the intrinsic safety option (code E), yes — you must install a certified Zener safety barrier or galvanic isolator between the power supply and the sensor. This limits the voltage and current reaching the sensor to intrinsically safe levels (Ui≤28V, Ii≤93mA). The barrier is installed in the safe (non-hazardous) area. Standard barriers from major manufacturers such as MTL, Pepperl+Fuchs, or Turck are compatible. If using only the flameproof option (code D), no barrier is required but the cable must be routed through approved explosion-proof conduit.

For ranges below 6 bar (35 kPa to 4 bar), the HE60 uses a welded stainless steel diaphragm isolation design with an oil-filled cavity — providing excellent low-pressure sensitivity while maintaining media isolation. For 6 bar and above, sputtered thin-film technology is used where the strain gauge is molecularly bonded directly to the stainless steel diaphragm, eliminating oil fill entirely and providing a more robust, leak-proof construction suitable for higher pressures.

Yes. The HE60 is certified to IIC gas group, which is the most stringent classification and covers hydrogen and acetylene — the most explosive gases. Both the Ex ia and Ex d ratings are IIC-classified, so the HE60 is suitable for environments where hydrogen or other IIC-group gases may be present. However, ensure the wetted materials (17-4PH or 316 SS) are compatible with your specific hydrogen application conditions, particularly at high temperatures where hydrogen embrittlement may be a concern.

The Ex d variant includes a 1/2″ BSP explosion-proof conduit adapter. The sensor cable must be routed through certified explosion-proof flexible conduit to prevent cable damage, abrasion, or short circuits that could create ignition sources. All cable glands and junction boxes in the circuit must also be Ex d rated. Proper installation according to local hazardous area wiring regulations (e.g., IEC 60079-14) is required to maintain the flameproof certification.
