Frequently Asked Questions

Sapphire (monocrystalline Al₂O₃) has exceptional hardness (9 on Mohs scale), outstanding chemical inertness, and excellent elastic properties. Unlike bonded strain gauges or piezoresistive silicon sensors, sapphire diaphragms do not suffer from creep, hysteresis drift, or long-term fatigue. This results in superior long-term stability, wider operating temperature range (-65°C to +150°C), and reliable performance in harsh chemical environments. The all-welded, oil-free construction also eliminates the risk of process contamination from silicone fill fluid.

The HE28 covers an exceptionally wide range from 100 kPa (1 bar) up to 160 MPa (1600 bar) in gauge mode, and up to 40 MPa (400 bar) in absolute mode. With a 4× overload capacity, the sensor can withstand pressure spikes up to four times its rated range without damage, making it suitable for hydraulic systems and high-pressure industrial environments.

Yes. The HE28 is rated for compensated operation from -40°C to +85°C and can survive storage temperatures as low as -65°C. The sapphire diaphragm’s thermal properties ensure reliable measurement even in cryogenic applications such as LNG storage monitoring, liquid nitrogen systems, and cold-chain industrial processes. The oil-free construction means there is no fill fluid that could freeze or become viscous at extreme low temperatures.

The HE28 offers four output options: 4–20 mA (2-wire, code A1) is the most common for industrial process control and long cable runs due to its noise immunity. 1–5 V (code V1) and 0–5 V (code V2) are suitable for data acquisition systems and PLCs with voltage inputs. 0.5–4.5 V (code V3) is designed for embedded OEM applications with 5V supply. Choose 4–20 mA for distances over 15 meters or electrically noisy environments, and voltage output for shorter runs or direct microcontroller interfacing.

The HE28 is designed for over 100 million pressure cycles, far exceeding conventional foil strain gauge sensors (typically rated for 10–50 million cycles). The sapphire diaphragm exhibits virtually zero mechanical fatigue, and the all-welded stainless steel construction provides excellent corrosion resistance. Combined with ≤0.2%/year long-term stability, the HE28 delivers consistent accuracy over many years of continuous operation with minimal recalibration requirements.

HE28 Sapphire Pressure Sensor with titanium-sapphire sensing element

Overview

The HE28 sapphire pressure sensor leverages the unique properties of single-crystal sapphire bonded to a titanium/silicon alloy diaphragm. This sensing principle delivers outstanding measurement stability across extreme temperature ranges from -65°C to +150°C, making it one of the most versatile pressure sensors for demanding industrial environments where conventional silicon-based sensors cannot operate reliably.

With pressure coverage spanning from 100 kPa to 160 MPa and 4× overload protection (up to 200 MPa), the HE28 is built for high-pressure applications including oil and gas exploration, hydraulic systems, water-jet cutting equipment, and deep-well monitoring. The all-welded stainless steel construction with no oil-fill ensures safety in critical applications while providing excellent corrosion resistance.

Available in both gauge and absolute pressure configurations, the HE28 achieves a typical accuracy of ±0.4% FS with exceptional long-term stability of ±0.15% FS/year. The sensor’s compact, rugged design withstands 1000g shock and ±20g vibration per IEC standards, certified CE for European compliance.
